Lily’s eyes lit up. “Really? You wouldn’t mind? I could use a nice dip.”

Marcus laughed. “Of course not, kiddo. We’re all family, remember? There’s nothing I wouldn’t do for you.”

Lily stood up, grabbing her towel. “Let’s go, then,” she said, and they walked back into the yard together, laughing and chatting. Marcus couldn’t help but feel a sense of pride at how quickly Lily had adapted to their new life. She was a bright, curious girl, and he knew that if given the chance, she could amount to something truly special.

As they reached the edge of the pool, Lily suddenly turned to Marcus, her green eyes blazing. “You know, Marcus, I think it’s time we stop pretending.”

“Pretending? About what?” Marcus asked, confused.

“About how I feel about you,” Lily whispered. “I love you, Marcus. I’ve loved you since the day you married Mom, and I think… I think I need you to love me back.”

Marcus’s jaw dropped. “Lily, I… This isn’t right. I’m your stepfather!”

“And I’m a woman now,” Lily snapped. “I can make my own choices, and I choose you. I want you, Marcus. I need you.”

With that, she rose up on her tiptoes and pressed her lips to his, kissing him deeply. Marcus hesitated for a moment, but then his arms wrapped around her waist, pulling her close as he returned the kiss with a fervor that threatened to consume them both.
